In this paper, we argue that the gap between empirical software engineering and software engineering practice might be lessened if more attention were paid to two important aspects of evidence. The first is that evidence from case or field studies of actual software engineering practice are essential in order to understand and inform that practice. The second is that the nature of evidence should fit the purpose to which the evidence is going to be put. One type of evidence is not per se better than another. For example, the evidence required to persuade a manager to change an aspect of practice might be totally different in nature from that required to deepen the academic community's understanding of such practice.

Today's fast-moving technology demands ever quicker and more reliable ways to develop software systems that meet user needs. Software has become the "magic glue" that holds the components of every complex system together, the "magic putty" that fills the cracks between these components, and the "magic mold" that gives the system an outward "look" matching the user needs. Software engineering is an emerging discipline aimed at addressing the above concern. This paper discusses the curriculum and issues of the software engineering education in California State University Los Angeles.

This paper summarizes the progress made in clarifying and analyzing the framework of interdisciplinary software engineering, which was first formulated at STEP2002, Montreal. The framework identified ideas, models and techniques which are in common use by other disciplines, and are deemed applicable to software engineering to address a number of outstanding issues in software engineering practice. One year and two further workshops down the line, we take stock of achievements, outline changes and draw plans for future work in the area. We report the discussions at the workshops, present a revised framework and highlight areas where further work is needed.
